Varicose Vein Symptoms

An individual can experience one or more symptoms of varicose veins on their legs. In addition to the visible appearance of knotted and purplish veins, patients can also have:

  • Swelling and Throbbing
  • Feeling of cramping or aching pain
  • Vein tenderness
  • Tingling or burning sensations
  • Tiredness/Heaviness

If you experience any of these varicose vein symptoms and postpone treatment, the condition may progress so that you may develop more serious complications. Potential complications include:

  • Blood Clots (e.g., Deep Vein Thrombosis, DVT)
  • Inflammation (phlebitis)
  • Bleeding
  • Skin Ulcers and sores on the ankles

If you have experienced any of the symptoms above, you should schedule an appointment with a physician. Treatment may be necessary for your condition. Varicose veins may appear like cords: twisting and bulging. Although they often appear inside the leg or in the back of the calves, they can form on any location of the leg.

Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins, although the conditions are similar. Spider veins appear blue or red and are usually located closer to the surface of the skin. They vary in size, and often have the appearance of a tree branch.
