Vein Centers

Not all vein centers are equal. Treatment of venous disease is a complex issue, often involving an underlying disease process. It is critical to identify a vein specialist with a comprehensive knowledge of venous disease and the capability to treat ALL stages of venous disease or you may be setting yourself up for failure and frustration. Many ‘vein centers’ only treat certain types of vein problems (e.g. spider veins) and may not be appropriate for your issue. The following two questions can help determine if yours is a comprehensive vein center or vein specialist (answers should be YES for both):

1. Do you use ultrasound when evaluating and diagnosing venous conditions?
2. Do you offer varicose vein treatments (like EVLT® or surgery) in addition to spider vein treatment (like sclerotherapy or transdermal laser).

Treating venous disease can be a lot like fixing a leak in your basement. You can simply mop up the water or replace damaged carpets, but these ‘treatments’ only address the symptom of the problem. If you do not address the root cause of the problem (a crack in the foundation?), you may be dealing with the same issue again in short order (e.g., the next time it rains). Vein treatment can be similar. ‘Symptoms’ like spider veins and varicose veins often are indicative of an underlying venous problem (failed valves or venous reflux). Treatments like sclerotherapy or transdermal (non-invasive) laser may address these symptoms, but do not address underlying venous disease. If this underlying disease is present, reoccurrence of your spider veins or varicose veins is common, and you will likely be returning for additional treatment soon. A treatment like endovenous laser treatment (EVLT®) is necessary to address underlying superficial venous disease. A comprehensive vein center can properly assess if you have underlying disease and, if so, will offer solutions like EVLT® to properly address the issue.
