About Intermountain Vein Center

The Intermountain Vein Center is the leading EVLT® laser treatment center in Utah having performed thousands of EVLT® procedures and other treatments for varicose veins and spider veins. Physician Biographies

Dr. Carl Black - Dr. Black is the Director and Co-Founder of the Intermountain Vein Center. He has expertise in treatment of disorders of the arterial and venous circulation, acute stroke intervention, and carotid artery stenting. He is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology and neuroradiology. Dr. Black graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.  He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at George Washington University, trained in neuroradiology at the Barrow Neurological Institute and in interventional radiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Dr. Mark S. Asay - Dr. Asay is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology. He graduated from medical school at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and completed a residency in diagnostic radiology followed by further training in vascular and interventional radiology at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. In addition to his medical expertise, Dr. Asay holds an MBA from the Brigham Young School of Management and speaks, reads, and writes Mandarin Chinese.

Dr. Stephen Douglas Brown - Dr. Brown is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine, followed by an internship in transitional medicine at LDS Hospital. He completed his residency in diagnostic radiology and then a fellowship in interventional radiology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. John S. Collins - Dr. Collins is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology. Dr. Collins received his Doctor of Medicine from Tulane Medical School in New Orleans followed by an internship. He then completed a residency in radiology and a fellowship in interventional radiology at Harbor/UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Daniel J. Hatch - Dr. Hatch is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology. After graduating from medical school and completing an internship at the University of Utah College of Medicine, Dr. Hatch filled a residency in radiology followed by a fellowship in vascular intervention at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Dennis Heaston - Dr. Heaston is fellowship-trained and board certified in interventional radiology. Dr. Heaston obtained his medical degree, completed an internship in therapeutic radiology and a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine.  His fellowship in diagnostic radiology was completed at the Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute located in Houston, Texas. Dr. Heaston is fluent in English and French, proficient in Spanish, and has a basic knowledge of German, Italian, and Japanese.

Dr. Ryan B. Nielsen – Dr. Nielsen is board-certified in interventional radiology and neuroradiology.  Dr. Nielsen graduated from Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska. He completed his residency in neuroradiology and then an internship in vascular and interventional radiology at Duke University Medical Center.

Dr. Robert P. Smilanich - Dr. Smilanich is fellowship-trained and board certified in general and vascular surgery.  Dr. Smilanich graduated from medical school at George Washington University in Washington D.C.  He continued his studies there to complete an internship and residency in general surgery. He then concluded a fellowship in vascular surgery at Penn State University. Dr. Smilanich served as a major in the United States Air Force, working as chief of the vascular surgery service at the University of Texas Health Science Center before becoming director of the Utah Vascular Center.
